Brief Description This module will consider the underpinning biochemistry and physiology of nutrition for health and sports performance. Study will involve lectures, tutorials and computer aided learning. The link between nutrition and health and nutrition and sports performance is well established and students will be expected to examine recent literature that includes nutritional guidance in health, physical activity and sports performance contexts.
Indicative Syllabus Topics covered include: energy balance; the macronutrients (fat, carbohydrate and protein); selected micronutrients; fluid balance and hydration strategies; ergogenic aids. In addition, students will perform a dietary analysis.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) appraise the sources of macronutrients, vitamins and minerals;
b) interpret the results of a dietary analysis;
c) employ the concept of energy balance in a health and sports performance contexts;
d) analyse the relationship between recommended nutrient intake values and health and sports performance;
e) illustrate the importance of fluid intake for health and sports performance.
