Brief Description This module will cover physiology as it applies to exercise for health. The study of healthy body systems will provide a basis for further study about exercise prescription and medical conditions. Students will develop laboratory skills for assessment and exercise testing.
Indicative Syllabus Emphasis will be placed on the heart and the rest of the circulatory system, ventilation and gas exchange, and neuromuscular function. Laboratory practical sessions will introduce students to laboratory techniques for assessing exercise tolerance in both well and unwell individuals.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) discuss healthy physiological systems;
b) identify appropriate exercise tests;
c) analyse exercise test outcomes;
d) identify the physiological limitations to exercise tolerance.



ii. Skills
The learning activities associated with this module are intended to develop the following:

Transferable skills:
a) problem solving;
b) application of numerical techniques;
c) communication and literacy;
d) working with others;
e) use of information and communications technology.

Subject specific skills:
a) safely and competently conduct exercise tests.
