Brief Description | The aim of this module is to introduce students to the discipline of ethics (moral philosophy) through a series of controversial issues in the ethics of sports. The module aims to develop students' ability to analyse reading on, think critically about, and argue clearly on a range of controverisal topics such as cheating, doping, equity, fair play and nationalism in contemporary sports. The module is recommended for students with an interest in applying philosophical skills to a range of ethical issues in sport. |
Indicative Syllabus | The module will develop further students' awareness of philosophy as a discipline through the branch of ethics. It will build upon their awareness of the philosophy of sport, to think critically about key ethical issues in sports. While the module is issue-driven it will also develop key critical reasoning abilities that should extend to clear thinking about issues in sports generally. It will serve also as an introduction to three key ethical theories: deontology, utilitarianism and virtue-theory. |
