Brief Description The aim of this module is to introduce students to the discipline of ethics (moral philosophy) through a series of controversial issues in the ethics of sports. The module aims to develop students' ability to analyse reading on, think critically about, and argue clearly on a range of controverisal topics such as cheating, doping, equity, fair play and nationalism in contemporary sports. The module is recommended for students with an interest in applying philosophical skills to a range of ethical issues in sport.
Indicative Syllabus The module will develop further students' awareness of philosophy as a discipline through the branch of ethics. It will build upon their awareness of the philosophy of sport, to think critically about key ethical issues in sports. While the module is issue-driven it will also develop key critical reasoning abilities that should extend to clear thinking about issues in sports generally. It will serve also as an introduction to three key ethical theories: deontology, utilitarianism and virtue-theory.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student will be able to:
a) clearly grasp central issues in the ethics of sport from doping, equity, elitism, fair play, and nationalism;
b) appreciate the role of moral concepts, principles and ethical theories in the discussion of ethical issues in sports.



ii. Skills
The learning activities associated with this module are intended to develop the following:

Transferable:
a) communication and literacy;
b) independent learning and working.

Subject specific:
a) the capacity for reflective and rigorous argumentation on contentious issues through debating real and hypothetical ethical dilemmas in sport.
