Brief Description This module will provide the student with an understanding of the psychological processes and theories associated with exercise and health behaviour. This module will develop further the foundations learnt in SPX109 with specific application to exercise for health.
Indicative Syllabus

Topics covered will include: health beliefs; stress and coping; motivation and adherence; social cognition; theories of health behaviour change.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of this module the student should be able to:
a) appreciate attitude formation and beliefs about health and exercise;
b) analyse theories of motivation and behaviour change;
c) appreciate adherence theory as it relates to exercise and health;
d) demonstrate awareness of theory based interventions designed for the adoption and maintenance of behaviour change.



ii. Skills
The learning activities associated with this module are intended to develop the following:

Transferable skills:
a) communication and literacy;
b) independent learning and working.

Subject specific skills:
a) develop a theory-based intervention for the adoption and maintenance of physical activity within the health and exercise context.
