Brief Description Understanding of a variety of research methods will be developed through classroom based and directed independent study. The knowledge and skills gained through this module will prepare students to produce a dissertation. In addition, the knowledge gained will enable students to interpret and critique a wide range of published research.
Indicative Syllabus

Overview of research - what is research? what is knowledge?
The ethics of research;
Establishing research questions;
Operationalising research questions;
Research design;
Techniques – observation, interviews, experimental research; surveys and questionnaires;
Development of a research proposal.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Identify ethical issues when addressing research questions;
b) Develop research questions;
c) Identify appropriate techniques to gather data to address a research question or hypothesis;
d) Demonstrate an awareness of the issues surrounding the use of a particular research technique;
e) Justify a research design to address a research question or hypothesis.

By the end of the module it is intended that students should have developed the following:
