Brief Description This module examines the latest developments in multi agency approaches which provide for, or facilitate, sporting opportunities at all levels of the sports development continuum. In addition the module examines motivations and constraints affecting individuals in the context of sports and exercise participation. The module will be of value to students who have an interest in sport and exercise and their development in contemporary society.
Indicative Syllabus Sports development - an overview; sports development partnerships; sports development models; barriers and constraints to sports participation; sports participation; sports specific development - case study material; target group sports development - case study material. In addition to this theoretical base, visiting speakers from a range of sports agencies offer insight into practice of sports development partnership approaches.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Critically evaluate barriers to participation in sport and identify low participation groups;
b) Critically explore the range of factors which motivate people to participate in sport and exercise;
c) Critically evaluate initiatives for promoting participation in sport, in particular the use of multi agency approaches;
d) Assess the effectiveness of a range of providers in promoting sport in community settings.
