Brief Description | This module draws upon perspectives from a range of social science disciplines including sociology, criminology and psychology to examine the role active leisure plays in youth culture. It aims to enable students to develop a critical appreciation of some of the most significant issues affecting young people, such as the development of group and personal identity. The module explores the theoretical propositions about the rejection by young people of established trajectories and communities and the increasing role of complex 'choices' and hence, risk-taking, in the development of young people's lives. The nature of youth and factors influencing youth cultures, identities, citizenship and links to established communities are also examined, alongside the various underlying assumptions used in tackling problems associated with youth disaffection such as crime, substance misuse and anti-social behaviour. The module focuses on live issues, and regularly benefits from guest speakers and practitioners. |
Indicative Syllabus | This module builds on the work done in SPV203 Sport in Society and SPV201 Sport and Social Inclusion. In doing so, it applies the sociological and social policy elements of these modules to existing policy debates and issues. The module explores the historical and sociological concepts of youth; culture; youth cultures and subcultures; lifestyle and identity formation; analytical models from sociology, psychology and criminology. It goes on to examine the reasons behind youth disaffection, the forms this may take, and the 'youth crime problem' as expressed through media representations, political discourse and statistical data. |
