Brief Description This module explores philosophical issues and questions associated with the value and meaning of sport as part of human life. The aim of the module is to encourage a deeper engagement with the nature of human existence and to consider the place of sport within it.
Indicative Syllabus

This module allows students to consider ontological questions involved in the nature of existence.  In particular, it will explore the nature of being human, and the value that sport provides in a flourishing human life.  It will consider the relationship between sport and the broader questions of human life and meaning.  Topics that will be discussed include the concept of death in sport and its relation to participation in extreme sports, the synonymy between sport and religion, and the notions of freedom and choice in human action.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of this module the student should be able to:
a) Articulate philosophical conceptions of what it is to be human;
b) Critically consider the value that sport has within human life;
c) Think critically about the concepts surrounding human existence, such as: ‘life’, ‘death’, ‘the absurd’, ‘sport’, ‘spirituality’ and ‘religion’.
