Brief Description This module examines the emergence and development of sports organisations in both national and international contexts between the late nineteenth century and 1980s. The module focuses on the British social and cultural environment in an internationally comparative context.
Indicative Syllabus

The module explores the nature of historical analysis and thinking as well as crucial issues in the emergence in the late nineteenth century of sports organisations through investigations of the social history of codification of games into sports and the central role of amateurism in British sports history.  Individual sessions consider the emergence of Physical Education in the context of sport and games, of national policy advisory and representative bodies, as well the relationship between international political demands and British sports, and the social significance of class and ethnicity in British sports history.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) consider the historical basis and development of key sports organisations in the UK;
b) deploy evaluative models in order to interpret the cultures and sub cultures which predominate in these sports organisations;
c) appreciate key developments in sports provision in the state provision and education sectors in the last century.

The learning activities associated with this module are intended to develop the following:

Subject specific skills:
a) evaluation of historical evidence to construct a plausible historical argument.
