Brief Description This module will examine a range of issues in sport from a sociological perspective. Emphasis will be given to explanations of the role of sport in contemporary society, which reflect the paradigmatic approaches outlined in SPX103 - Introduction to the Sociology of Sport and Exercise.
Indicative Syllabus

This module progresses the work undertaken in SPX103 in relation to the analysis of sport from a functionalist and Marxist perspective, and introduces interpretative and postmodernist approaches.  These competing theories are utilised to explore a range of issues in sport such as: deviance within sport; the relationship between sport and identity; commercialisation in sport; and race and gender.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Explore the sociological basis and context of a number of issues which question the role of sport in contemporary society;
b) Appreciate the impact and role of sport upon groups and individuals;
c) Apply sociological approaches to the explanation of the role of sport in society;
d) Think critically about, and debate, the role of sport in society;
e) Collect information from a variety of sources; observe, read and comprehend the information and use it to develop a personal opinion.
