Brief Description | This module will examine a range of issues in sport from a sociological perspective. Emphasis will be given to explanations of the role of sport in contemporary society, which reflect the paradigmatic approaches outlined in SPX103 - Introduction to the Sociology of Sport and Exercise. |
Indicative Syllabus | This module progresses the work undertaken in SPX103 in relation to the analysis of sport from a functionalist and Marxist perspective, and introduces interpretative and postmodernist approaches. These competing theories are utilised to explore a range of issues in sport such as: deviance within sport; the relationship between sport and identity; commercialisation in sport; and race and gender. |
