Brief Description

This module provides students with a breadth of understanding in current issues of sports therapy practice. Students will be taught advanced examination and assessment, treatment and rehabilitation techniques. Key sports medicine issues will also be addressed.

All assessment is non-compensatory. Students must pass all elements of assessment in order to get a pass grade for the module.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:

a) change their practice as needed to take account of new developments;
b) understand the specific contribution that sports therapy can make to enhancing the individuals functional and sporting ability as well as understand the evidence base for this;
c) demonstrate awareness of the different concepts and approaches that inform the development of sports therapy interventions;
d) understand the application of hydrotherapy exercises for the improvement of joint range of motion, muscular strength and general fitness;
e) show awareness of the role of coaches and athletes in reducing the risk of injury and illness including those related to physical conditioning, acclimatisation, nutrition and fluid balance, as well as the care and maintenance of protective equipment and organisation of practice sessions and coaching methodology;
f) understand the basic principles of nutrition and how they relate to the needs of the competitive and recreational athlete;
g) be aware of the effects of commonly abused drugs and other substances on the athlete’s physical and psychological health and athletic performance;
h) understand the role and function of medical/paramedical and other health care professionals and the role of a sports therapist in a multidisciplinary team;
i) critically analyse contemporary research in the area of injury assessment and evaluation.



Subject specific skills:

a) selection and prescription of hydrotherapy exercises specific to the athlete;
b) be able to use appropriate and specific tests for peripheral and vertebral joint function;
c) be able to implement safe and effective practice as a result of research findings;
d) practice effective sports therapy techniques to treat sports specific injuries;
e) practice advanced taping techniques for sports specific injuries.
