Brief Description

This module enables students to consolidate the skills they have learnt to date throughout the course, and apply them in a clinical setting.

Students will have to complete 150 clinical hours in which to complete the module in a variety of different Sports Therapy settings. This module also provides students with the business skills to equip the practitioner to operate as a freelance therapist and/or operate a clinic as a small business.

All assessment is non-compensatory. Students must pass all elements of assessment in order to get a pass grade for the module.

Indicative Syllabus
  • Research evidence within the area of sports therapy;
  • Assessment and rehabilitation protocols and treatment plans;
  • Therapeutic interventions available at each stage of the rehabilitation process, and the appropriateness of such interventions to manage and treat a range of injuries;
  • Contemporary research and current industry benchmarks that relate to treatment planning;
  • Taping, strapping, electrotherapy, manual therapy and hydrotherapy techniques
  • Principles of business practice
  • Marketing, promotion and advertising
  • Clinical practice
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:

a) Review and critically analyse contemporary research in the area of sports therapy;
b) Evaluate and implement safe and effective practice as a result of research findings;
c) Demonstrate a critical appreciation of the components of a comprehensive rehabilitation programme;
d) Select appropriate therapy techniques including massage, manual therapy and electrotherapy;
e) Command an in depth understanding of the physical effects and contraindications associated with exercise and rehabilitation;
f) Develop criteria for progression through the various stages of rehabilitation, culminating in resumption of unrestricted participation
g) understand the role, limitations and competencies of a sport therapist and how their role interacts with other healthcare professionals;
h) efficiently record and manage patients' appointments, personal details, medical and treatment records;
i) design and employ initial and ongoing promotional campaign to attract and maintain clients using a variety of media;
j) understand and have access to current legislation, licensing laws, clinical practice ethics and the role of professional and governing bodies;
k) Understand the availability of and requirements for continuing professional education opportunities and the development of resources for sports therapists.



 ii. Skills
The learning activities associated with this module are intended to develop the following:

Subject Specific Skills:
a) Basic accountancy;
b) Promotion and advertising;
c) Use of Administrative software;
d) Basic business skills.

Transferable Skills:
a) The administration of appropriate comparative clinical muscle and stress tests and comparative neurological tests;
b) Initiating and implementing referral to an appropriate healthcare professional using the relevant terminology;
c) The application of appropriate massage, manual therapy and electrotherapy interventions;
d) The application of appropriate rehabilitation including gait re-education programmes;
e) The planning and implementation of pre-discharge assessment programmes and post-discharge exercise and conditioning programmes;
f) the construction and phrasing of questions appropriate to obtaining the relevant medical history of an injured/ill patient or client.
