Brief Description This module looks at the rehabilitation of sports injuries using specific criteria for progression. Students learn how to rehabilitate acute and chronic injuries and from the acute stage to pre discharge functional stage.

All assessment is non-compensatory. Students must pass all elements of assessment in order to get a pass grade for the module.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:

a) Describe and analyse the components of a comprehensive fitness and injury prevention programme;
b) Command an understanding of the physiological effects of a range of training methods and understand the associated risks with each;
c) Formulate a comprehensive and appropriate rehabilitation programme;
d) Demonstrate a broad understanding of the principles of movement;
e) Evaluate and select appropriate therapies including electrotherapy;
f) Evaluate the environmental risk factors associated with the safe return to competition;
g) Recommend appropriate training regimes for both athlete injury and sport;
h) Analyse and utilise a variety of equipment; resistance, aerobic and flexibility;
i) Appreciate the role of the coach and liaise and work with coach;
j) Give guidance on the logistic, practical and environmental conditions and situations in which exercise takes place;
k) Assess the requirements of sports in terms of strength, endurance, aerobic fitness and the athlete’s current state with regards to those variables;
l) Demonstrate an understanding of the appropriate use of heat, cold, immobilisation and mobilisation techniques.



ii. Skills
The learning activities associated with this module are intended to develop the following:
Subject Specific Skills:
a) The selection and application of appropriate stretching, taping, splinting and special protective devices;
b) The application of resisted exercises through the use of exercise and exercise equipment;
c) The application of group and individual exercise and rehabilitation programmes;
d) The application of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation techniques;
e) The application of appropriate electrotherapy interventions safely and effectively;
f) The application of whole body exercise programmes to maintain and improve fitness within a rehabilitation environment;
g) The planning, application and implementation of objective sports and occupational fitness testing, “work hardening” rehabilitation, and pre-discharge programmes.
h) Exercise programming;
i) Equipment analysis;
k) Selection and using appropriate taping and splinting techniques.
