Brief Description This module considers issues surrounding the physiology of training for elite sports performance. Current practice in this area is evaluated and the strengths and weaknesses of alternative strategies are discussed. The module will also consider the validity and reliability of appropriate physiological measurement techniques. The module is recommended for any student who is interested in sports science support in general or exercise testing (as it relates to athletes) in particular. This module would be excellent preparation for work within sport science support, either as a practitioner or as an administrator.
Indicative Syllabus

The role of physiology in training for elite sports performance; assessment within a sport science support programme; evaluation of current practice with respect to training and assessment of athletes; relative merits and possible disadvantages of alternative strategies; issues of reliability and validity in the assessment of the sports performer.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) evaluate training techniques from a physiological perspective;b) evaluate the role of physiological assessment within a scientific support programme;
b) critically evaluate current practice with respect to the training techniques and assessment of athletes;
c) evaluate the relative merits and the possible disadvantages of alternative training strategies;
d) outline, for a range of assessment procedures, some of the precautions that ought to be taken to ensure the validity and reliability of the procedure.
