Brief Description This module will consider the link between nutrition and training & competition for sport performance. Students will be able to empirically study the effect of nutritional strategies on sports performance across a range of performance types (e.g., strength, power, endurance). The efficacy of the nutritional strategies will be examined in relation to findings of previous studies. The module will be of use to students with an interest in sports performance, and builds on the Nutrition for Sport and Exercise module (SPX213).
Indicative Syllabus

The module will allow students to critically examine: the design and delivery of sports nutrition interventions; the evidence base for sports nutrition interventions; common nutritional ergogenic aids; laboratory techniques for the collection of performance and metabolic data.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) assess the link between nutrition and training & performance;
b) show a critical awareness of the efficacy of a range of nutritional ergogenic aids;
c) appraise the key issues in designing sport nutrition studies;
d) critically evaluate evidence presented by sport nutrition studies;
e) appreciate the importance of nutritional knowledge for the practicing Sport Scientist.



ii. Skills
The learning activities associated with this module are intended to develop the following:

Transferable skills:
a) communication and literacy;
b) working with others;
c) independent learning and working;
d) use of information and communications technology.

Subject specific skills
a) Design of nutritional intervention studies;
b) Nutritional supplement dosage considerations;
c) Sources of empirical sports nutrition evidence.

Learning and Teaching Activities

Student private study: 80%

This module is Category A under the University's Active Engagement in Learning Scheme. This means that absence from specified sessions will result in loss of marks (5% from the final module mark for each occasion of non-attendance).
