Module Title Biomechanics of Human Movement II
Module Code SPS302
Module Tutor Martine Deighan
School Sport and Exercise
CAT Points 15
Level of Study 6
Pre-requisites Before taking this module you must pass SPS202
Co-requisites None
Restrictions None
Brief Description This module focuses on the application of biomechanics to sport and exercise. This laboratory based module concentrates on the methods of kinetic and kinematic analysis to maximise sports technique and optimise human movement.
Indicative Syllabus

The module includes the application of kinetic and kinematic analysis methods to a variety of sports performances. The module is predominantly laboratory based, developing biomechanical and data analysis skills; evaluation of human movement using techniques such as: 2-D and 3-D motion analysis, force transducers and pressure systems, dynamometry, and electromyography.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) evaluate selected sporting skills using mechanical theories;
b) apply experimental protocols used in a biomechanics laboratory to investigate sport and exercise techniques;
c) critically analyse the findings of a laboratory based investigation, draw conclusions and make recommendations based on those findings.

ii. Skills
The learning activities associated with this module are intended to develop the following:

Transferable skills
a) problem solving;
b) use of information and communications technology;
c) communication and literacy;
d) independent learning and working.

Subject specific skills
a) laboratory research methods;
b) applied biomechanical evaluation of human movement.
