Brief Description Through a series of topical lectures, sport science support will be located within the landscape of support for the sport performance unit. Students will be encouraged to look beyond issues associated only with direct delivery of sport science to also examine broader socio-cultural factors which impact significantly on sport science provision. Such factors include: mono, inter and multi - disciplinary sport science application; demonstrating support efficacy; communicating effectively to clients; and understanding politics and funding arrangements associated with sport science provision in the UK.
Indicative Syllabus

This module content will allow the student to examine the role of sport science support alongside other forms of sport performer support. The importance of sport science support will be addressed in the context of World Class Sport. Weekly tasks will enable students to develop a case for sport science support funding alongside medicine, coaching and lifestyle support.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) argue the case for a sport science support programme based on theoretical discipline based knowledge;
b) critically examine the contribution of sport science to performance sport in relation to other areas such as sports medicine and coaching;
c) justify the role of sport science in world class talent, development and podium plans.

The learning activities associated with this module are intended to develop the following:

Transferable skills:
a) communication & literacy;
b) problem solving;
c) independent learning & working.

Subject specific skills
a) application of sports science knowledge within the context of a sport performance support team.
