Brief Description This module will allow the student to complete a research project, which will address a sport science challenge. The research project may be a pilot study for the dissertation. The module will offer ideal preparation for the student intending to complete a dissertation (SPS333).
Indicative Syllabus

The module content will include the various aspects of undertaking independent study including: completing a literature review; study design, data collection, data analysis, synthesis of findings; and evaluation of the research process.  The module will enable the student to complete a final research report.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of a sport science area of interest;
b) appreciate, explain and apply a chosen research design;
c) explain and complete procedures of data collection;
d) synthesise the study findings within the context of contemporary literature;
e) evaluate the research process.



ii. Skills
The learning activities associated with this module are intended to develop the following:

Transferable skills:
a) independent learning and working;
b) communication and literacy.

Subject specific skills:
a) undertake an independent study;
b) produce an independent study report.
