Brief Description This module will consider in detail the critical areas of attention, stress and individual difference and their impact on sports performance. The variables of attention and stress are crucial influences on performance and have detailed motor control and behavioural elements. Understanding how these variables influence performance, and can be altered to enhance performance, is of great value to the coach, performer or sport psychologist.
Indicative Syllabus

The student will consider the inter-relationship between attention and stress, and examine how they affect performance. The student will also appreciate the moderating role that individual difference plays within the attention, stress and performance relationship.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) critically consider the key theories of attention and stress in sport;
b) appreciate and examine the key influences of attention and stress on sport;
c) identify and apply theoretically based information to enhance individual performance.

ii. Skills
The learning activities associated with this module are intended to develop the following:

Transferable skills
a) application of numerical techniques;
b) communication and literacy;
c) independent learning and working.

Subject Specific Skills
a) carry out independent data collection and analysis using psychological assessment techniques;
b) use various techniques to assess attention and stress within sport;
c) experimental report writing.

Student private study: 80%

002: 50% Written Exam: End of year, unseen, closed book: 2.00 hours
