Brief Description This module examines the physiological demands of sporting events, limitations to performance, physiological determinants of performance and their assessment.
Indicative Syllabus The module content will allow the student to consider the physiological demands of various types of sporting events. For each type of event the physiological factors that either determine or limit performance are examined. Methods of assessment for these determinants of performance are also considered. The module builds on the knowledge and skills developed in SPX106, and underpins further study in modules such as SPX315, SPS313, SPS333.
Learning Outcomes

i Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student will be able to:
a) analyse the characteristics of sporting events in terms of their physiological demands;
b) evaluate the factors that are most likely to limit performance in particular events;
c) evaluate the physiological determinants of performance and means of assessment.



ii. Skills
The learning activities associated with this module are intended to develop the following:

Transferable skills:
a) application of numerical techniques;
b) independent learning and working;
c) use of information and communication tasks;
d) working with others.

Subject specific skills
a) employ laboratory based techniques to assess some common determinants of performance;
b) evaluate the results of such an assessment with reference to normative values
