Brief Description

This module will develop students practical competencies in the delivery and implementation of individual strength and conditioning sessions building on the practical and theoretical understanding developed at level one. Coaching and communication skills will also be developed as part of the core practical conditioning skills.

Indicative Syllabus

Students will be taught to deliver safe and effective training sessions for the improvement of all components of fitness with particular emphasis placed upon the safe and effective delivery of strength, speed, plyometric and flexibility/mobility sessions. To assist students with this, student competencies in technical error detection and correction will be developed.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:

  • Analyse the prime movers, synergists, correct muscle recruitment patterns and the type of muscle contraction required during core strength and conditioning skills
  • Identify, interpret and correct common kinesiological errors during core strength and conditioning skills for performance enhancement
  • Demonstrate risk assessment, health and safety and emergency procedures in the strength and conditioning environment
  • Apply the skill acquisition, strength and conditioning and sport specific literature in relation to coaching athletes 
  • Apply the theory of strength and conditioning to practical development of individual sessions
  • Demonstrate and apply coaching theories and communication techniques for effective delivery of information


ii. Skills

The learning activities associated with this module are intended to develop the following:

Subject specific skills:

  • Produce a monitoring programme to evaluate athlete progress
  • Demonstrate appropriate and effective communication with athletes
  • Work and communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Act professionally in accordance with confidentiality agreements and data protection legislation
  • Undertake a kinesiological analysis of core strength and conditioning skills
  • Undertake the technical coaching of specific strength and conditioning techniques including weight lifting, plyometric, speed, agility, flexibility, aerobic endurance and anaerobic endurance activities
  • Prepare and deliver warm-up and cool down activities appropriate to the session and athlete
  • Demonstrate the delivery of safe, effective and appropriate training methods
