Brief Description A fundamental role of the coach is to understand how technology can be used to improve one’s observation, analysis and feedback about technical and/or tactical performance outcomes. This module aims to develop the students’ ability to conduct a qualitative analysis of movement and match performance.
Indicative Syllabus This module will examine qualitative analysis of performance techniques. Students will use technology to enhance observational accuracy and analysis of sports performance in order to provide high quality feedback and adapt practices to improve technical/tactical skill of athletes/players. Particular emphasis will be on 2D motion analysis and notational analysis techniques.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Evaluate own past coaching practice and the degree of subjectivity inherent in the observation of technical performance in that sport;
b) Justify how current qualitative analysis of performance techniques may help to objectify certain aspects of the coaching process;
c) Review the possibilities and limitations of a selection of current qualitative analysis technologies for a range of sports;
d) Analyse, using mechanical principles of movement, a closed skill;
e) Execute a 2D qualitative analysis of a performer/player in a chosen sport;
f) Analyse performance outcomes and provide effective feedback to improve technical/tactical skill.
