Module Title The Reflective Coach
Module Code SPG203
Module Tutor Sarah Dibble
School Sport and Exercise
CAT Points 15
Level of Study 5
Pre-requisites None
Co-requisites None
Restrictions None
Brief Description Many traditional coach-education programmes have relied on increasing a coach’s theoretical knowledge-base with the assumption that transfer of knowledge will occur. This module will promote learning through the use of reflective techniques which provide the link between theoretical knowledge and its application in practice. Students will study the theoretical concepts of reflective practice and consider its value and uses for working coaches. Through active and experiential learning students will be encouraged to consider how the development of reflective learning techniques will provide them with an essential and sustainable skill for life long learning and professional development.
Indicative Syllabus Students will be encouraged to use reflective techniques to help them learn, solve problems and to inform and improve their coaching practice. A range of reflective models and theories will be studied in order to gain a deeper understanding of the process of reflection and students will be given opportunities to apply these techniques in different coaching scenarios. Students will be encouraged to consciously make sense of what has been learned and draw on various information sources, including experiential and theoretical coaching, behavioural and pedagogic constructs, to formulate plans to improve practice and facilitate continuing progression in learning.
