Brief Description

This module gives students the opportunity to explore the concept, rationale and application of adventurous activities. A residential, practical week, coupled with on-site lectures and discussions encourages students to consider the practical, social and psychological elements of adventurous activities. The module addresses the outdoor/adventure element of the PE National Curriculum requirements. It will also be of benefit to any student as it will allow them to develop their teamwork, leadership and personal development skills.

Indicative Syllabus

This module will focus on the concepts of risk, responsibility, courage, social interaction, problem solving and leadership competencies of the sports student.  It is designed to provide opportunities to deliver outdoor adventurous activities in a practical setting and will focus on a critical analysis of these activities within an applied environment.  Practical elements include: climbing, abseiling, high-ropes course, hill walking and navigation as well as the challenge of living, working and achieving success in an alien environment with groups you have never worked with before.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:

a) critically analyse their own abilities and potential in an unfamiliar environment;
b) appreciate the potential for the outdoors as an environment to support learning within the field they are studying;  
c) critically analyse outdoor activities from a variety of standpoints.



ii. Skills
The learning activities associated with this module are intended to develop the following:

Transferable Skills:
a) working with others
b) problem solving
c) communication and literacy

Subject Specific Skills:
a) social interaction
b) a variety of specific skills related to the activities, for instance, climbing, caving, navigation/map reading etc
c) managing and organising an outdoor adventurous activities experience

Learning and Teaching Activities

Staff/student contact: 20% via a residential Field Week
Student private study: 80%
