Brief Description

This module develops student knowledge and understanding of Physical Education, Health and the promotion of life long physical activity. It analyses the role and responsibility of the School environment in the promotion and the development of a physically literate individual. Specific strategies that aim to promote a healthy, active lifestyle will be analysed.

Indicative Syllabus

The module will analyse the potential role that Physical Education can play in the contribution to and preparation for lifelong physical activity. It will critically analyse what it means to be a physically educated and literate individual. Specific policies and practices that have been developed to promote and encourage engagement in physical activity will be analysed and discussed.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) appreciate the concepts pertaining to the delivery of health related physical education;
b) critically review personal assumptions about practice in a selection of practical contexts;
c) critically evaluate practice in chosen areas of interest and its application to the curriculum.



ii. Skills
The learning activities associated with this module are intended to develop the following:
