Brief Description

The module enables students to apply theoretical models of the nature of 'striking and fielding' as well as 'net' games in an informed and analytical fashion. Students are required to engage in an active process of observation, diagnosis and analysis through a variety of different experiential learning opportunities. This module is recommended for students with an interest in Teacher Education. It will provide an experiential base in striking and fielding as well as net game activities that resonates with some of the explicit imperatives of the National Curriculum in Physical Education.

This module is Category A under the University's Active Engagement in Learning Scheme. This means that absence from specified sessions will result in loss of marks (5% from the final module mark for each occasion of non-attendance).

Indicative Syllabus

The module will focus on the understanding of the competencies of the analytical sports educator. The experiential basis of the module will be through indicative content which may include: tennis, cricket, badminton, squash, softball, rounders, golf and volleyball.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:

a) analyse components of a range of games classifications
b) observe, interpret and analyse sports performance in a particular activity (set of activities);
c) Analyse the theoretical underpinnings from the sport and exercise sciences which inform the practice of the physical educator.



ii. Skills
The learning activities associated with this module are intended to develop the following:

Subject Specific Skills:
a) technique observation
b) strategy/tactical observation

Staff/student contact: 30%
Student private study: 70%
