Brief Description This module will advance technical knowledge in Gymnastic activities through experiential and applied learning in the practical activity. Furthermore, it aims to develop an aesthetic understanding and critically analyses current teaching and coaching approaches in gymnastic activities.
This module is recommended for students wishing to pursue a career in teaching. It will allow them to build on their knowledge, skills and understanding of gymnastics in the National Curriculum. This module will also develop knowledge of health and safety aspects associated with the teaching of gymnastic activities.
This module is Category A under the University's Active Engagement in Learning Scheme. This means that absence from specified sessions will result in loss of marks (5% from the final module mark for each occasion of non-attendance).
Indicative Syllabus Through lectures and practical activity students will cover:
Sequence development using apparatus, movement combinations of different gymnastic styles; technical knowledge of vaults and floor routines; relationship with apparatus, partners and groups; analysis of different teaching ad learning trends in gymnastics in relation to National Curriculum requirements.

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Demonstrate an advanced technical knowledge of the body in action through gymnastics
b) Demonstrate advanced appreciation of aesthetic movement in the analysis of technical routines
c) Analyse current approaches to the teaching of gymnastics
