Brief Description

This module will advance technical knowledge in dance through experiential and applied learning in the practical activity whilst providing an exploration of different delivery methods of this activity area. Furthermore, it aims to develop an artistic and aesthetic understanding and critically analyses current influences in routines, styles and choreographic trends.
This module is recommended for students wishing to pursue a career in teaching. It will allow them to build on their knowledge, skills and understanding of dance in the National Curriculum. This module will also develop knowledge of health and safety aspects associated with the teaching of dance.
This module is Category A under the University's Active Engagement in Learning Scheme. This means that absence from specified sessions will result in loss of marks (5% from the final module mark for each occasion of non-attendance).

Indicative Syllabus Through lectures and practical activity students will cover:
Artistic and aesthetic intention; Dance styles of European and American choreographers; reflection on different social contexts; choreography and performance of dances; debate on the relationships between style and choreographer; analysis and reflection on the teaching of dance and composite elements of performing, composing and appreciating dance.

i.Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Demonstrate advanced technical knowledge of the body in action through dance
b) Demonstrate advanced appreciation of artistic intention and aesthetic movement in the interpretation of technical routines and styles
c) Analyse current influences in the designs of routines
d) Appreciate the relationship between the choreographer and his/her style
e) Explore current approaches to the teaching of dance
