Brief Description

This module will develop subject knowledge in athletics through experiential learning. Furthermore, it aims to develop the ability of students to relate subject knowledge to groups of learners in both teaching and coaching contexts through the selection, delivery and evaluation of appropriate athletics activities. This module is recommended for students wishing to pursue a career in teaching or coaching. It will develop students’ ability to analyse and synthesise appropriate subject knowledge for the teaching and coaching of athletic activities.

This module is Category A under the University's Active Engagement in Learning Scheme. This means that absence from specified sessions will result in loss of marks (5% from the final module mark for each occasion of non-attendance).

Indicative Syllabus This module involves analysis of the body in action through theoretical and practical lectures. Athletics activities analysed include: throwing, jumping and running actions in relation to specific athletic events. Applied subject knowledge developed in a safe learning environment.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Examine in depth technical knowledge of specific athletic events
b) Analyse and apply scientific principles to developing the athlete
c) Evaluate and apply safety considerations relevant to specific athletic events.

The learning activities associated with this module are intended to develop the following:

Transferable skills:
a) Communication and literacy
b) Working with others
c) Independent learning and working

Subject specific skills:
a)Training principles in athletics

Staff/student contact: 30%
Student private study: 70%
