Brief Description

This module aims to develop the students knowledge and understanding of current concepts, trends and research findings pertinent to adapted physical activity and sport. It will examine the effects of various disabilities on the physical/motor performance of an individual and compares and contrasts methods of adapting activities to meet the needs of all individuals. The role of adapted physical activity and sport as a means of meeting the needs of individuals with disabilities will be discussed and current strategies and programmes will be highlighted. This module is Category A under the University's Active Engagement in Learning Scheme. This means that absence from specified sessions will result in loss of marks (5% from the final module mark for each occasion of non-attendance).

Indicative Syllabus

The module will introduce and examine the concept of adapted physical activity and sport. It will develop an understanding of related terminologies and present the laws affecting the rights of individuals with disabilities within the context of physical activity and sport opportunities. Predominant disabilities will be identified within a physical activity context. Factors that influence the development of a sport and recreation programme for individuals with disabilities will be considered. Current opportunities for individuals with disabilities to participate in physical activity and sport will be discussed and specific strategies for coaching and teaching individuals with disabilities will be highlighted. Students will enhance their professional development by transferring the theoretical knowledge they develop in lectures to a practical situation where they will plan, initiate and participate in a sports programme that meets the needs of individuals with disabilities.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Comprehend and analyse specific terms, principles, and laws related to adapted physical activity and sport;
b) Analyse and appreciate the physical activity and sport needs of individuals with disabilities;
c) Recognise and appreciate the specific disabilities that teachers/coaches may encounter in a teaching/coaching situation and implications for providing safe and effective activities;
d) Reflect on and engage with specific strategies for coaching and teaching individuals with disabilities in a physical activity setting;
e) Analyse the relationship between community-based programmes developed to promote participation in physical activity & sport and National Governing Bodies of Sport.
