Brief Description The module introduces students to the current state of knowledge in Physical Education by identifying the changing academic and professional perspectives which inform pedagogy in the Physical Education context. It focuses specifically on curriculum planning and design and compares and contrasts different approaches to curriculum development and their impact on pupil development and learning.
Indicative Syllabus The module focuses defining the curriculum subject of Physical Education, its aims and objectives, the concern of the teacher and respective practices through the planning processes of curriculum design. It illustrates varying levels of planning within the discipline of pedagogical practice and analyses how this impacts on teaching and learning across the National Curriculum for Physical Education.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the students should be able to:
a) Demonstrate awareness of the influential and critical ideas which subscribe to a contested meaning of physical education
b) Compare and contrast different curriculum models within Physical Education.
c) Appraise the application of curriculum planning in the context of Physical Education and the National Curriculum.
d) Appreciate the different purposes ascribed to teaching and the desired learning outcomes.
