Brief Description

The module develops student's knowledge about Sports Coaching and Sports Pedagogy. It identifies contemporary themes and future trends, engendering a critical awareness of the parameters of pedagogy through research and the study of various practical contexts. The module is recommended for students with an interest in coaching.

Indicative Syllabus

Advanced delivery techniques; specific coaching scenarios; critical analysis of own and others' performance. Analysis of teacher/coach behaviour; characteristics of effective teaching/coaching sessions - planning, management, mentoring, progression, continuity and safe practice in specific contexts.

Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) demonstrate a critical awareness, through research, of the concepts pertaining to the delivery and management of coaching;
b) critically review and reflect upon personal assumptions about practice in a selection of practical contexts;
c) based upon individual research, critically evaluate practice in chosen areas of interest.
