Brief Description This module builds upon the students’ knowledge of strength and conditioning principles to develop coherent and progressive developmental plans across all levels. Students will plan focusing on the variables of training, highlighting the importance of rest and recovery for progressive improvements in skill execution and performance. Training cycles, long-term planning, peaking for competition and talent identification and development will all be considered.
Indicative Syllabus Principles and variables of training, preparation for training, session planning and periodisation, rest and recovery, training cycles, annual and multi-annual plans, talent identification and development, peaking for competition, developing strength, speed, power and endurance, the planning process and the athlete, evaluation and reflection.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding

On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) demonstrate a critical awareness of the variables of training and their importance for sport specific environments.
b) critically evaluate literature in the area
c) critically appreciate the importance of rest and recovery
d) develop theoretically underpinned training programmes for sport performance.
