Brief Description Due to the pervasive nature of groups within sport and the impact that groups have on the performance of the individual, it is important for coaches, teachers and sport psychologists to have an understanding of group dynamics. Students will examine and evaluate current knowledge of group productivity and functioning and to evaluate current practice in team building programmes. The module will examine those factors that contribute to group productivity and functioning. These will include the abilities of team members, the impact of the group environment, group organisation and leadership.
Indicative Syllabus This module explores the nature and utility of groups, effects of group interaction and communication, variability of group resources, and the nature of group development. Leadership theories, team building strategies and team building in sport will be explored and possible interventions introduced.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Evaluate the extent to which negative effects of group processes have an impact in sport;
b) Compare and contrast models of group development with respect to member turnover and team effectiveness;
c) Critically assess the validity of leadership theories in the context of sport;
d) Explain strategies for team building in sport;
