Brief Description This module is designed for students who have an interest in coaching within a high performance setting and will analyse the skills required to coach at this level.This will be studied within the context of the UK Coaching Certificate and the relevant level descriptors, including the ability to generate, direct and manage the implementation of cutting-edge coaching solutions and programmes.
Indicative Syllabus

The module will identify exactly what is meant by high performance coaching, the skills needed to coach in a high performance setting and investigate the types of problems a high performance coach encounter.

Students will develop a critical appreciation of:

  • talent identification and long term athlete development;
  • the implementation of training, strength and conditioning and recovery programmes at a high performance level;
  • the importance of sports science as a support mechanism for high performance coaching.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Analyse the skills needed by a coach to work in a high performance setting and find innovative and creative solutions to coaching problems;
b) Critically appreciate Talent Identification alongside Long Term Athlete Development;
c) Critically review periodised training programmes aimed at peaking for an event;
d) Critically review strength and conditioning and recovery programmes aimed at peaking for an event;
e) Critically evaluate the role of sport science and technology in high performance coaching.

002: 50% Coursework: Standard (1500 words or equivalent)
