Brief Description The module develops a student's critical awareness of the UK coaching context and contemporary issues associated with coaching, coaching development and performance enhancement. A range of participant populations will be considered (e.g. grassroots to high-performance; children to adults). The module content will reflect the on-going trends and initiatives in coaching and provide the students with valuable and up-to-date knowledge of these contemporary issues. Recommended for those who may be involved with individuals or teams in sport especially as a teacher or coach but also as a sport scientist, participant, manager or sports development officer.
Indicative Syllabus Coaching structures in Europe; socio-historical developments in sports coaching in the UK; contemporary issues in coaching in the UK; the training and development of coaches in the UK; mentoring and reflective practise in coach development; licensing in UK sports coaching; the coach-athlete relationship; and ethical and professional issues in sports coaching.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and Understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) review key socio-historical events associated with sports coaching developments in the UK;
b) demonstrate a critical awareness of the landscape of sports coaching in the UK;
c) demonstrate a critical appreciation of a range of contemporary issues in sports coaching in the UK;
d) explain the importance of research and critical enquiry into sports coaching practice and policy.
