Brief Description This module will put coaching within the context of the organisations involved in delivering coaching at all levels – from government to local provision. The module will explore the historical context and development of national coaching frameworks and will consider the key elements in developing a successful coaching system. The role of national governing bodies within the delivery of coaching and coach education will be analysed and evaluated.
Indicative Syllabus

This module will explore:

  • the development of the National Coaching Foundation and its subsequent evolution into Sportscoach UK;
  • the development of the National Coaching Framework and the development of the UK Coaching Certificate;
  • The professionalisation of coaching in relation to the development of coaching pathways and continued professional development within specific sports.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Evaluate the role of Sportscoach UK in the development of coaching frameworks
b) Analyse the success of the implementation of the UK National Coaching Framework
c) Identify the difference in approaches to coaching and coach education between different national governing bodies
d) Analyse the role of UKCC in standardising coach education across a range of sports
e) Appreciate the key drivers of change for coaching in the UK
