Brief Description This module will develop subject knowledge in strength and conditioning activities through experiential learning. Furthermore, it aims to develop the ability of students to relate subject knowledge to athletes through the selection, delivery and evaluation of appropriate components of physical fitness. Applied subject knowledge is developed in a safe learning environment. The module is recommended for students wishing to pursue a career in coaching, or strength and conditioning. It will develop the ability of students to analyse and synthesise appropriate subject knowledge for the coaching of athletes.
Indicative Syllabus This module involves the application of scientific knowledge for the components of physical fitness through theoretical and practical lectures. Activities covered include: strength, power, plyometrics, endurance, and speed. Students will develop a generic understanding of the key principles then look to apply to sport-specific settings.
Learning Outcomes

i. Knowledge and understanding
On successful completion of the module the student should be able to:
a) Analyse the scientific principles underpinning components of physical fitness;
b) Apply the principles of training when designing, administering and monitoring specific training sessions;
c) Design, monitor and evaluate training methods for strength, power, endurance, and speed;
d) Review research into the science of sports training.
