Brief Description

The module aims to provide students with a critical awareness of applied contemporary issues in the sport, education and exercise sectors. Students will examine a number of topics from a range of sport, education and exercise disciplines thereby enhancing their depth and breadth of knowledge in the area. As far as possible, topics will focus around the interests of the student group. Students will be encouraged to make constructive, evidence based, practical recommendations following structured debate.

Indicative Syllabus

From developing an understanding and appreciation of contemporary themes from within the field, students are empowered to formulate personal opinion, soundly underpinned through theoretical evidence and apply to formal debate settings. In exploring key contemporary issues, students will be encouraged to draw on a strong theoretical basis from some of, but not limited to, the following sport, education and exercise disciplines: Biomechanics; Nutrition; Philosophy; Physiology; Psychology; Sociology; Pedagogy; Coaching.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:...

1)Critically demonstrate a familiarity with a range of contemporary issues in research and practice in the sport and exercise area

2) Demonstrate a critical awareness of theoretical perspectives related to a selection of contemporary sport, education and exercise topics

3) Critically review applied contemporary issues for a selection of key sport and exercise topics

4) Demonstrate the importance of an evidenced based approach to sport, education and exercise recommendations

Design, construct and facilitate formal debate focussed towards and based upon module content
