Brief Description | The module explores a number of sociological approaches to consumption in contemporary society through investigations of issues in sport media (including broadcast, narrowcast, niche, new and virtual media), cultures of celebrity, performance, sporting identities and subcultures and sport consumption as a central element of everyday leisure and commercial activities. |
Indicative Syllabus | The module weaves a series of themes through various sessions. These themes include: commercialising and commodifying sport; global sports markets; the sport-media complex; fans and/as sports consumers; user generated media (such as, fanzines and blogs); virtual sports practices (such as fantasy leagues, games platforms, and modified games forms such as Wii); branding, marketing and celebrity; consumer activism. |
Learning Outcomes | On successful completion of the module the student should be able to: a) Evaluate the sociological significance of various forms of sports consumption; b) Demonstrate a critical understanding of a range of socio-cultural theories of consumer society; c) Critically apply socio-cultural theories of consumption to sport to evaluate the fit between theories of sports engagement and theories of consumer society. |
