Brief Description

This module draws upon perspectives from a range of social science disciplines including sociology, criminology and psychology to examine the role active leisure plays in youth culture and community development. It aims to enable students to develop a critical appreciation of some of the most significant issues affecting young people and other sectors in communities, such as the development of group and personal identity in addition to community capital and social capital.

Indicative Syllabus

The module explores the historical and sociological concepts of youth and community; youth cultures and subcultures; lifestyle and identity formation; analytical models from sociology, psychology and criminology. It goes on to examine the nature of the wider community and the role that sport and physical activity plays in the context of the development of community cohesion, capacity and capital within wider social discourse.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:...

 

1.    Critically understand the role of active leisure in the construction of lifestyle and identity for both young people and other sectors of the community

2.    Explore the relationships between youth culture, active leisure and sports development;

3.    Evaluate the complex factors and circumstances that contribute to community cohesion and development
