Brief Description

The Physical Activity and Sport Enterprise (PhASE) was created by students in the Department of Sport and Exercise in 2006, after two years of negotiation and planning. PhASE is a voluntary association based on the principles of social enterprise, and allows students the opportunity to develop real-world sports initiatives and interventions. PhASE works closely with the module teams for SPV202, the suite of placement modules and SportsCVs – the Department's unique volunteering scheme – to help deliver social inclusion and educational projects in North Gloucestershire. This module is designed to act as a foundation for PhASE Board members, offering them bespoke management training, ongoing consultation and the opportunity to reflect at length on their experiences as directors of a sports development agency.

Indicative Syllabus -

In order for students on the Board to manage PhASE activities in the most effective manner they will be offered the opportunity to draw upon the knowledge of a range of experts in the Department.  Normally, this support will take the form of an induction programme; bespoke management training (depending on the role of the individual – e.g. Chair, Treasurer, Secretary) and ongoing consultation.  Specific learning pathways will be negotiated with Board members on an annual basis, and will vary in relation to the strategic position of PhASE and any local trading or partnership opportunities that may emerge.  Ultimately, the Board of PhASE will determine the direction and focus of the enterprise, and therefore on the precise nature of their learning on the module.

Learning Outcomes

As an Active Learning module students will devise specific and individual learning agreement contracts for the module in consultation with module staff.  Given the wide range of possible learning environments it is not possible, nor indeed desirable, to prescribe generic module learning outcomes that meet the needs of individual situations.  However example learning outcomes are provided below for illustrative purposes.

On successful completion of this module the student will have taken strategic responsibility for the management and operation of a sports development enterprise and activities within the enterprise.  This responsibility will facilitate a process of critical reflection that enables each participant to apply relevant disciplinary knowledge to their specific experiences.
