Brief Description | This module explores philosophical issues and questions associated with the value and meaning of sport as part of human life. The aim of the module is to encourage a deeper engagement with the nature of human existence and to consider the place of sport within it. |
Indicative Syllabus | This module allows students to consider philosophical questions involved in the nature of existence and the human life. In particular, it will explore the nature of being human and the value that sport provides in a flourishing life. It will consider the relationship between sport and the broader questions of human life and meaning. Topics that will be discussed include the value of play, games and sport, sport and its relation to concepts such as pain, pleasure, the sublime and death, and the notions of freedom and choice in human action. |
Learning Outcomes | A student passing this module should be able to:
1. demonstrate a depth of understanding of ontological concepts and questions; 2. apply a sophisticated knowledge of these questions to the practice of sport and related activities; 3. evaluate a range of competing perspectives on the value of sport and synthesise these with a broader philosophical and experiential knowledge. |
