Brief Description

The module develops a student's critical awareness of the UK coaching context and contemporary issues associated with various aspects of coaching.  This module adopts a problem-based approach, requiring the student to consider innovative and creative solutions to contemporary coaching problems.  Consequently, students will require a broad range of individual and group working skills in order to explore these complex problems from a number of theoretical and pragmatic perspectives.

Indicative Syllabus

This is a problem-based learning module, so the theoretical content is dictated by the student.  Students will predominantly work in groups to construct a solution to the problem they have been set, requiring extensive meeting and consultation outside the timetabled workshops.  Workshop themes will include scoping the problem, strategising the resolution, presenting initial solutions, considering alternative strategies, creating interruptions and accessing information.

A student passing this module should be able to:

1.  Demonstrate critical and current understanding of a wide range of factors impacting on sports coaching practice

2.  Provide innovative and creative solutions to complex, coaching-related, problems
