Brief Description

This module focuses on understanding the importance of reflective practice (RP) and learning strategies to assist and development of sports coaches. The module blends theoretical and practical opportunities to experience a variety of approaches to facilitate RP in sports coaching.

Indicative Syllabus

Theoretical and practical opportunities are provided to increase students’ awareness of reflective practice and its importance in the learning and development of sports coaches as well as athletes.  Students will reflect upon how the environment they construct as coaches, their coaching philosophy,  behaviours and the relationships they cultivate, directly impact on the experience and well-being of participants.  Cultural norms and discourses that serve to simply sports coaching praxis are challenged using evidence from contemporary theory and research. A range of activities to facilitate RP and critical thinking will be introduced and students will learn about these in both classroom and practical settings. Mentoring is one activity via which RP in coaching can be facilitated and this receives particular attention as students are given the opportunity to develop an appreciation of the role of mentoring in learning via firsthand experience.
