Brief Description | This module will advance knowledge in the teaching and learning of gymnastic activities through experiential and applied opportunities. Furthermore, it aims to develop an aesthetic understanding of the value and purpose of gymnastics and critically analyses current teaching and coaching approaches in gymnastic activities. This module is recommended for students wishing to pursue a career in teaching. It will allow them to build on their knowledge, skills and understanding of gymnastics in the National Curriculum. This module will also develop knowledge of health and safety aspects associated with the teaching of gymnastic activities.
This module is Category A under the University's Active Engagement in Learning Scheme. This means that absence from specified sessions will result in loss of marks (5% from the final module mark for each occasion of non-attendance). |
Indicative Syllabus | Through lectures and practical activity this module is likely to include; Sequence development using apparatus, movement combinations of different gymnastic styles; technical knowledge of vaults and floor routines; relationship with apparatus, partners and groups; analysis of different teaching and learning approaches in gymnastics in relation to National Curriculum requirements. |
Learning Outcomes | A student passing this module should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an advanced technical knowledge of the body in action through gymnastics. 2. Demonstrate advanced appreciation of aesthetic movement in the analysis of technical routines. 3. Analyse and reflect on current approaches to the teaching of gymnastics and gymnastic based activities. 4. Apply teaching and learning-based knowledge to underpin an evidence-based approach to practice. 5. Critically evaluate a range of educationally focused sources of information and interpret their impact on a sports education setting. Work safely and responsibly in an educational setting, recognising boundaries of professional competence; |
