Brief Description

This module will advance technical knowledge in dance through experiential and applied learning in the practical activity whilst providing an exploration of different delivery methods suitable for curriculum. Furthermore, it aims to develop an artistic and aesthetic understanding and critically analyses current influences of choreography and choreographers.

 

This module is recommended for students wishing to pursue a career in teaching. It will allow them to build on their knowledge, skills and understanding of dance in the National Curriculum. This module will also develop knowledge of health and safety aspects associated with the teaching of dance.

This module is Category A under the University's Active Engagement in Learning Scheme. This means that absence from specified sessions will result in loss of marks (5% from the final module mark for each occasion of non-attendance).

Indicative Syllabus

Theory lectures and practical activity. Artistic and aesthetic intention; Dance styles choreographers; reflection on different social contexts; choreography and performance of dances; debate on the relationships between style and choreographer; critical reflection on the teaching of dance and composite elements of performing, composing and appreciating dance.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

 

1.    Demonstrate advanced technical knowledge of principles of movement in dance.

2.    Demonstrate advanced appreciation of artistic intention and aesthetic movement in the interpretation of choreography and choreographers.

3.    Analyse current influences in the choreography and dance production relevant for working with young people.

4.    Explore current approaches to the teaching of dance choreography and appreciation.

5.    Analyse current practice in sport and physical education settings.

002: 50% Coursework: Group work, presentation: 20 Minute group presentation.
