Brief Description

This module aims to review critically a range of advanced medical conditions, their pathophysiology, and the role that exercise plays in the management of these conditions.

Indicative Syllabus

The indicative content to this module will encourage the students to review critically falls prevention, stroke, mental health, back pain, obesity, diabetes, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, long term neurological conditions; and examine the role that exercise plays in their prevention, management and treatment.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a detailed and critical understanding of the pathophysiology of a range of advanced medical conditions;
  2. Evaluate critically the health implications of advanced medical conditions;
  3. Explain the role of exercise within the prevention, management and treatment of advanced medical conditions;
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the ethical implications associated with exercise referral within special populations;
  5. Appraise critically the current evidence-base for the use of exercise as a management tool in advanced medical conditions
  6. Undertake a risk assessment based on the synthesis of information from a referral from a health professional.
