Brief Description

This module will develop the necessary skills to critically assess movement impairments and construct appropriate corrective exercise programmes to enhance athletic performance. Students will learn advanced assessment techniques pertaining to functional movement and joint by joint function. There will also be an opportunity to become a Corrective Exercise Specialist (CES) through the National Academy of Sport Medicine (NASM).

Indicative Syllabus

The unit content will include skills to further enhance the abilities and effectiveness of developing coaches to reduce injuries and communicate with medical professionals in an elite setting. Students will also use the module to complete a corrective exercise case study in order to ensure practical application of relevant techniques and integration into a suitable strength and conditioning programme.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a critical knowledge of functional human anatomy and Integrated movement
  2. Develop, synthesise and implement a validated corrective exercise programme for a range of movement dysfunctions
  3. Conduct posture, movement, range of motion and manual muscle tests for a specified athlete and coach a validated corrective exercise programme based on the findings from these assessments.
  4. Appraise critically and present research pertaining to movement impairment in order to justify corrective exercise selection and programme design
