Brief Description

This module will develop holistic skills required to become an advanced practitioner in strength and conditioning. Students will examine contemporary issues in strength and conditioning as well as examining the wider responsibilities of the advanced strength and conditioning coach.

Indicative Syllabus

Students will critically review contemporary issues in strength and conditioning including emerging concepts surrounding advanced training methodologies, neuroendocrinological responses to training, and nutritional strategies for athletes with different training and performance needs. Students will also develop a critical understanding of the important role of rehabilitation and recovery strategies. Additionally, students will learn the specific requirements and training approaches when working with female, senior and youth athletes.

Learning Outcomes

A student passing this module should be able to:

  1. Critique emerging themes in the strength and conditioning literature regarding their practical application to the delivery of effective programmes and sessions
  2. Review the responses of the neural and endocrine systems in response to training
  3. Evaluate critically the role of the strength and conditioning coach in achieving the sport specific demands of the rehabilitation process
  4. Construct a criterion based return-to-sport fitness assessment tool for the individual or group of athletes in a specific sport
  5. Evaluate the effects of growth and maturation on strength and conditioning provision when coaching young athletes
  6. Evaluate critically the effects of aging on strength and conditioning provision when coaching senior athletes
  7. Critique the unique demands experienced by female athletes when undertaking a strength and conditioning programme
